The Dominic Barberi Multi Academy Company (DBMAC) are part of the Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham family of Catholic Schools. St Gregory the Great, Cowley is one of only two Catholic Secondary schools in Oxfordshire and, in 2013, determined to extend catholic education to primary school-age children by leasing and refurbishing the Cricket Road Building and is now an all-through school from nursery-19. The newly refurbished Cricket Road Building provides the dedicated nursery and primary school education.
Constructed in the 1950’s as a school, it is concrete framed, brick clad externally, with flat roofs and single-glazed windows and doors. In order not to lose vital internal floor area the external walls were covered with an external insulated through-colour render; windows and doors were replaced throughout with new double-glazed curtain wall systems; the roof was also improved with new insulation and a single ply membrane covering and light was added to corridor spaces with the introduction of a number of new rooflights; services were replaced entirely, and classrooms created with modern facilities for learning.
The structure of the building was largely sound. Some concrete repairs were carried out and fire compartmentation was upgraded. Insulation was added to bring U-values to modern standards and finishes replaced to suit the requirements of the new environment.
Other characteristics include:
- New kitchen facilities installed
- New play areas created to suit curriculum requirements
- Computer links added from adjacent secondary school
- New electrical installation including main and sub-main distribution
- New mechanical installation including new heating plant
- New platform lift installed
The project was procured traditionally under a JCT Intermediate Building Contract 2011. Bills of quantities were used to maximise the competitive process and provide clear and detailed cost for the management of change post contract. Beard Construction were appointed on the basis of a 47-week construction programme.
