PSP has been appointed by The Ernest Cook Trust to provide full quantity surveying services on the refurbishment and extension of The Stable Block, which currently houses offices and seminar rooms for the Trust. The project will bring together the three core functions of the Trust, namely Education, Estate Management and Grant Funding under one roof to facilitate and integrate the services. The Trust aspires to create an Environmentally Literate Society.
The existing building is being stripped back to shell, removing numerous 20th century additions including a first floor structure, and refurbishing the areas to form the main office functions. An extension is being added and will incorporate architectural features to emphasise the client’s ethos with regards to sustainability and education in the natural world. Design will focus around fabric, renewables and mechanical and electrical services to deliver key targets on comfort levels, carbon footprint, energy saving and embodied energy.
The project is in the pre-application stages and design information is limited but will incorporate construction materials prevalent at the time the original building was constructed
Other characteristics will include:
- Glazing to minimise heat gain
- Foundations to minimise disruption to tree roots
- ASHP installation for heating and hot water
- Use of renewables including PV
- Heat recovery ventilation
The project is likely to be procured traditionally with a main contractor selected after competitive tendering of the works.
